Global Connections Celebrates International Womens Day through DVC With Tajik and Afghan Women: Embassies in Kabul and Dushanbe hosted a DVC for women from Tajikistan and Afghanistan to talk about shared issues on the eve of International Women’s Day. The event was organized by Relief International- Schools Online offices in Tajikistan and Afghanistan and featured women active in RISOL’s ECA-sponsored Global Connections and Exchanges program. The six women discussed the importance of education for women, the future of women as politicians in their countries and the role of women in Islam. There was curiosity on both sides about opportunities for women from strictly traditional families and the pressure on Tajik and Afghan women to marry early and curtail their education and careers. CAO pointed out that many women’s groups have used International Women’s Day to advocate for more rights, including voting and equal pay. While the Afghan women (who were all teenagers) seemed shy at first, by the end it was hard to get a word in, and one exclaimed “I will never forget this day!” at the end of the DVC. The Tajik women were eager to learn about Afghanistan and were pleasantly surprised when the Afghans understood a Tajik-language poem.____________ _________ _________ _________
